When I was a little girl I had a dream to sing, write music and become a recording artist. In my early twenties I wrote a worship song that became quite well known. However, the process that followed was challenging and hurtful, and I left the whole experience discouraged and without hope for a future in music.
While all this was happening, I had writer’s block and received a lot of negative feedback implying that I wasn’t good enough for the music industry. Deep down I knew I was called to this but I honestly had no idea how to pursue my dream. So I decided to give it to the Lord and trust Him with the timing of everything. Not long after this, my husband and I decided to move our lives to America to attend Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry, leaving everything behind.
The very week we applied to the school things began to change. I received a call from a successful songwriter, producer and recording artist who works for a large record company in Australia. He had been a friend of mine for a couple of years but I hadn’t heard from him in a while. He said, “I don’t know what it is, but I felt God tell me to call you and ask if I could mentor you in writing. Do you write music?” I said, “I used to write, but I’ve only written Christian music and worship songs.” He said, “Why don’t you come over to my studio and give it a try?” I couldn’t believe he was offering to mentor me in songwriting! I let go of fear and intimidation from the past and decided to step toward my dream.
One week later I was in his studio writing songs. He began playing some chords, and suddenly amazing melodies and words came to me. I literally felt God was giving me an ability to write lyrics that were about His Kingdom but didn’t preach at people. It was amazing to be able to craft songs that released the heart of the Father and expressed it in a way that would influence people toward Him.
Before I knew it I had written four songs! Two were picked up by my friend’s label and released on the album of the winner of a popular reality TV talent show. Another song was used by a large New Zealand charity that had all the major music artists of that country come together to sing my song. The fourth has been pitched and is currently in consideration to be released on the album of one of Australia’s most successful female artists.
All of this happened within my first week of writing! People at the record label began to ask, “Who is this girl? Why haven’t we heard of her?” I couldn’t believe the doors opening up for me. The amazing thing is that in this industry you normally have to submit at least a hundred songs before they will even have a look at one! How awesome is my Father in Heaven!
I have always had a heart to impact the music industry with the truth and love of our Creator. My time at Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry has been a year of preparation for sending me out into a world that desperately needs the words and sounds of Heaven. There is power in saying yes and taking a step toward your dreams. There is power in allowing your Father in Heaven to open the doors to get you there!
