I can’t even describe how disgusting it was. The water was bubbling, green and rancid-and a woman was swimming in it. As she climbed out of the squalid pool and dried off, my teammates and I approached her and her husband, hoping to strike up a conversation.
In a country full of voodoo priests and Satan worship, we knew this pool was dedicated to the devil. The sick came from all over the world to sacrifice animals, pour the blood into the pool and then swim in it, hoping to be healed of their diseases.
Hunched over and weary, the woman explained to us her long search for healing from the chronic pain plaguing her entire body. Through our translator, we explained we had come to pray for people to be healed and asked if we could pray for her. She eagerly agreed. She was so desperate to be healed that every time we stopped praying she tugged on our arms and said, “Keep praying, keep praying!” Each time we prayed, the pain moved to a different part of her body. Our team leader said this could be an indication of an evil spirit moving to other parts of her body to torment her as we prayed.
We quietly commanded the spirit to leave and she instantly started jumping up and down and smiling, telling us she felt it leave. For the first time in years, she was free from pain!
One of my teammates wrapped her arms around the woman, hugged her and whispered in her ear, “This is Jesus. He did this for you because He loves you. You don’t have to sacrifice anymore.” The healed woman clung to her and, overcome by love, invited Jesus to be her Savior.
The whole time her husband had been aloof and distant, refusing to stand near us. But when he saw his wife’s transformation, he stepped forward asking if he could have a hug, too! Thrilled, one of the guys from my team stepped forward and hugged him. Within minutes, he also accepted Jesus. This beautiful couple walked out of that dark place smiling ear to ear, completely healed, saved and delivered by the power of Jesus!
