My dad gave me two $10 bills for my mission trip to New York City and said, “Holy Spirit will tell you who to give them to.” No one seemed to stand out to me all week, although I was constantly on the lookout. I really didn’t want to give the money to just anyone, so my friend Solveig and I prayed it would be for someone who had asked God specifically for $10. When Solveig asked the Holy Spirit who to give them to, she heard, “Blue. Yellow. Black man. Subway.”
At the end of the week, I was beginning to wonder if I was going to give the money away at all. Our team helped with a Heaven in Business conference and a man in the congregation stood out to me because he was black and wearing a blue sweater and yellow undershirt. I brushed it off until Solveig came up to me and asked if I thought I was to give the money to that man. I said, “Yes,” but I was hesitant to follow through, because it felt embarrassing to give a New York businessman such a small amount of money. But Solveig said, “No, it will be a symbolic act of faith in God’s intention to bless him financially.”
Solveig boldly decided to tell the man how he matched our “clues” from God and gave him one of the $10 bills, saying God wanted to bless his finances. He was speechless for a second and then his head fell down in astonishment. He told us that as of yesterday, he’d had only $10 to his name, but he felt the Lord tell him to give it to a man on the subway, and that the Lord told him He would repay the $10!
I was moved with compassion and whipped out the other $10 and said, “Here. I just want to declare double for you!” He was touched and even more astonished because just that morning, he’d been meditating on Isaiah 61:7: “Instead of shame and dishonor, you will enjoy a double share of honor. You will possess a double portion of prosperity in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours.” (NLT).
Three months later, I received the following Facebook message from the man:
I don’t know if you still remember me. You prayed for my finances at a Heaven in Business conference at JHOP in New York in March. The previous day, I had heeded the Holy Spirit’s direction and gave away my last $10. You and your friend came up to me and gave me $10 a piece, after getting a word for me previously that same week… I wanted to let you know that in the past month, I’ve experienced quite some financial breakthrough, as I’ve been getting a steady stream of freelance and consulting work, up to the point that I’ll have to start turning some gigs down.
I just wanted to thank you for your obedience in seeking me out and praying for me, and I wanted to share my testimony with you.
