When I was a child, I struggled with a stutter and a severe case of dyslexia. When I tried to read letters, words, and even entire lines of text would scramble in front of me. I failed every spelling test and my grades averaged a D throughout school. But, in 2003, I got saved.
At that point, I was intending to be a Buddhist monk, but I was on the verge of committing suicide. As I wrestled with my life, I cried out to God for the first time. I said, “God, I need answers. If I don’t hear from You, I’m done.” I got up and as I was walking towards my Dad’s gun, the doorbell rang. I went to the front door to see who it was.*
At the door, two young Mormon women stood there looking stunned. Behind them, in the middle of the street their car sat with the doors wide open. I asked, “Is everything ok?”
They just stared at me and one of them said, “You’re never going to believe me, but a voice inside my car just said, ‘Stop the car and get out. There’s a boy in the brown house who needs questions answered. Go and tell him that all of the answers are in the Bible and only in the Bible.’”
A few weeks went by and I began to think I had imagined that whole encounter. Putting ideas of God behind me, I slipped back into my old lifestyle. On my way to a drug party, the two young women crossed my mind. At that moment, the phone rang and I said, “If this is them, God, I will give You my whole life.” As soon as I picked up the phone and saw the caller ID, I knew that I’d given my life to Him.
One of the girls came to share the Bible with me, showing me John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” I read it out loud before realizing that my stutter was completely gone. I had read the Bible without any difficulty. I was healed!
In that moment, I head God say, “Ask them a question.” With that, I began to ask them questions that I was hearing directly from God. Suddenly, an ex-Buddhist turned new Christian was leading a Mormon missionary to Christ. In the next six months, eight Mormons were saved.
