I was volunteering in a healing service one morning and started to pray over a woman when I heard God say, “She doesn’t think I love her.”
So I stopped and gently said to her, “Hey, can you look at me?” She peered at me through thick lenses and blinked. She was blind in one eye.
“God. Loves. You. It’s true, it’s true, it’s true,” I repeated. It wouldn’t stop coming out. It was like a train going full speed ahead, and her whole body vibrated more and more, and her body fell under the power of God.
When she came to, she sat up, looked me right in the eye, and said, “My mama was a witch! And she used to sneer at me and say, ‘Jesus loves you’ in a mocking voice and then laugh. So all my life, I’ve never known if it was true.”
She said she used to try to comfort herself in traumatic situations by singing the song “Jesus Loves Me This I Know…” even as an adult, but she never knew if it was true. So we sang it together to redeem it, and her eyes lit up. Her face was shining, and she couldn’t stop announcing, “God loves me. He loves me!”
After this revelation, she could read a page and a half of the eye chart after having been blind in one eye for thirty-five years. Love broke through. When the letters would start to get blurry, she’d mutter, “He loves me. He loves me,” and her vision would get clearer! The best part was she got so distracted by God’s love, she barely cared about getting the letters right. She’d be in the middle of reading a line, then stop and look at me with huge eyes and say, “He loves me.” It was hilarious. Yes, He loves you. It’s true.
