Shortly after I graduated from my first year at Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry, I interviewed six times for a position at a famous national television company in Ecuador. I had no experience for the position, yet on the sixth interview the director said, “There is something about you. I can’t tell what it is, but there is something that makes me want to hire you.” I replied, “I know what it is. You are seeing God in me.” He said, “You don’t have any experience in TV. However, there’s something about you that intrigues me. What do you think you can give us?” So I told him, “I can serve you well and show you how it is to serve a King.” He took a risk and gave me the job.
The company employs five hundred people, and as far as I know, I was the only Jesus follower. It was very difficult, and people seemed to hate me because of my relationship with God. My boss would say, “Please leave your God at the door.” Having just left Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry, I felt like I went from an atmosphere of love to an atmosphere of fame, drugs, money and cheating. I remember crying and telling God I didn’t want to do this.
I was assigned to do stories for a ten-minute health segment. I worked long hours to learn everything I could. I became best friends with the cameramen and the cleaning ladies. My boss saw how hard I worked and one day asked, “Why is it I always attack you and you never respond?” I said, “Because I believe love is stronger than hate and love is bigger than a bad moment. I feel I have to give you my best even if you don’t.” He didn’t understand but was intrigued.
Within three weeks, the general manager (GM) came to my office and asked me to be on TV and present a new segment. I said, “But I’ve only been here three weeks! I don’t have any experience.” He replied, “I have heard you perform with excellence. You’re starting tomorrow.” He told me he wanted me to have a morning segment where I could present whatever I wanted. “I want to see what you can do,” he said. “Whatever I want?” I replied. He said, “Yes.”
That night I went to bed and asked God, “What should I do?”
In the past I had been passionately involved in social projects like visiting prisoners in jail and going out into the streets to help women caught in sex trafficking. As I was trying to fall asleep I started seeing these people in my mind and began thinking about how they’d always been voiceless, but now I would have the power to give them a voice. I told my boss I wanted to tell their life stories, not as victims but as overcomers and people to admire. He told me I was crazy. I asked him to let me try for one week.
My first story was a powerful reenactment about a man who’d lived on the streets since he was six years old. One night he fell asleep under an ATM and woke up at three in the morning with someone trying to beat him. He got a knife out and almost killed his attacker. The next day he met someone on the streets who told him about God and it changed his life. Fast forward twenty-one years, and he is a musician and was accepted into two different universities in the United States.
When we filmed his story, everyone on set started crying. He started singing and everyone was amazed at how talented he was despite growing up on the streets. They asked him on live television how he did it and he said, “God.” From that moment on, I said, “Okay, God, use me. I don’t even know what I’m doing but You know.” The GM came to the set that day and in excitement he hugged me. “You did this!”
After the success of my first segment, I was given three time slots a week to present whatever stories I wanted. My show’s ratings were consistently higher than the ratings of all the other channels. Every time I presented a story, I would fall more in love with God. He was filling my heart with so much hope for people on the streets.
A few months later, I encountered a pregnant prostitute and it shattered my heart. I asked God to enable me to help women like her. I went to my GM and presented an idea for a social justice campaign and asked for his support, but he said he could not support me. I know God works through relationships, so I presented the idea to someone I knew who was a famous singer, and he wanted to help. A friend and I made photos and videos with him. Then suddenly everyone, including my GM, wanted to help us with our campaign.
Someone from Congress called me and agreed to let us present our campaign to Congress! Our presentation was a huge success and was aired on most of the television and radio stations around the nation.
During this time, my boss came to me and said, “I want to tell you my story.” He opened up and told me about the brokenness in his family. Then he said, “I know I’ve been hard on you, but I’ve learned something from you because you never react to me. I know I’ve hurt you and I know I didn’t make it easy for you, yet you were always kind to me. When I heard you talking about justice and those girls, I felt something new in my heart. I want you to tell me what the feeling is, because I have never felt it before.” He was into New Age beliefs, so when I told him it was the love of God he laughed. I told him, “The reason I didn’t react to you was because I felt the love of God for you. You are so loved by God, and He wants to restore your family, your heart, and your life.” He began crying and said, “You would hate me if you knew all the mistakes I’ve made.” I told him God’s love is unconditional. Then he said, “You are like a daughter to me.”
The work I did on the campaign also opened up the door for me to meet the First Lady of Ecuador. I had made a video highlighting the incredible work of an organization serving disabled children, and it turned out that the director of the organization was personally connected to the presidential family. He showed the segment to the First Lady and she asked to meet me. When I met her she was very interested in the reasons I was bringing these amazing stories about restoration to the TV.
My first nine months at this job were very hard but my Father in Heaven honored me. After I saw what God did in my life, how He used me to shout His stories and ignite a social justice movement that influenced the influential, all I could feel was so much love and thankfulness!
I left my job at the TV station because God was preparing me for a new level of influence. I received a call from the mayor’s office offering me a job. I am now working directly with the mayor and his advisors. All I can say is, God knows how to surprise me. In every season of my life I have been able to feel Him close to me. His love has changed my life and helped me change other people’s lives too!
