In the northern region of South Africa, where witchcraft is as widespread as wild baboons and poverty, my group went hut to hut telling people about Jesus, asking if anyone needed prayer for healing. We wanted to show people that the power of Jesus is supreme over every other spiritual power. People were hungry for the Good News. No one turned us down.
While the villagers came to us one by one for prayer and were healed, I noticed a woman standing off to the side, staring at all that was happening. Finally, she motioned us to her hut, urgently saying she needed to “get rid of some demons.” We quickly discovered she was a witch doctor so it wouldn’t matter how many demons we cast out – it would be just a temporary solution. I explained to her that Jesus has power over every spirit. After telling her about the powerful love and freedom available to each of us in Jesus, I asked, “Would you like to make Jesus the only Lord in your life?”
Witchcraft was her source of income, so she needed to choose between God’s power and her current livelihood. Finally, she decided she wanted Jesus, despite the cost. We prayed with her and began worshipping God, blessing her and her home. Soon her troubled expression disappeared and peace overcame her. We saw the supreme authority of Jesus our Savior firsthand and how those trapped by darkness long for His extravagant love and freedom.
